Who are the incontinence underwear designed for?

Incontinence underwear is suitable for all women regardless of age. They are a complete alternative to incontinence pads. LUNA+ incontinence underwear is ideal for light to moderate incontinence. For heavy incontinence, other products are recommended

Can I rely on incontinence underwear?

Standard incontinence underwear is usually very thick and resembles a diaper. If they are thinner, they are typically designed only for very light incontinence.

This is because most manufacturers still use outdated production methods, typically stitching. The underwear absorbs urine in its narrowest area, and once the liquid reaches the edges, it leaks through the stitching holes — causing accidents.

Even seamless underwear isn't fully protected, as the outer fabric can still absorb moisture. Manufacturers try to fix this by adding more absorbent layers. While this may delay leakage slightly, it doesn’t prevent it — and the result is thicker, less breathable underwear. This eliminates their main advantage over pads: being thin and discreet.

Are incontinence underwear leak-proof?

Although many sellers claim they are, the reality is different. Manufacturers often highlight the use of a special waterproof layer at the bottom of the underwear — which is breathable yet leakproof. And that’s true.
However, what they don’t tell you (or tend to hide) is that there is no leak protection on the sides. This means that, unless the incontinence is very light, there is a high risk of leakage — or it is compensated by adding an extra-thick absorbent layer.

You can save money with incontinence underwear

Incontinence underwear is a cost-effective and reliable solution for managing incontinence.

On average, a woman spends around 150 CZK per month on pads. Over 3 years, that adds up to approximately 5,400 CZK. 5 pieces of LUNA+ panties will be cheaper. And that's comfort and security!

How does incontinence underwear work?

Incontinence underwear is usually made using special fabric composed of several high-tech layers.

What is the principle behind incontinence underwear?

  • The first layer of incontinence underwear:
    - it touches the intimate areas, it is a functional layer, and using the so-called wicking effect, it quickly absorbs menstrual fluid into the second (absorbent) layer.
  • The second layer, the middle one:
    - is absorbent. It quickly absorbs menstrual blood.
  • The third, bottom, layer:
    - is a modern textile (impermeable membrane) that does not let in liquid, but is also very breathable and wicks away moisture. It is this layer that is susceptible to damage by high temperatures or fabric softeners during washing.
  • And then of course there's the outer layer of the panties themselves.

Incontinence underwear – an ecological alternative

TIP LUNAcare

LUNA+ incontinence underwear is certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class I = Health-safe product.
Incontinence underwear is highly valued for environmental reasons. They are waste-free and save a lot of waste from pads and tampons.

How to use incontinence underwear

How long can I wear incontinence underwear?

Incontinence underwear without antibacterial treatment for longer than 8 hours, with antibacterial treatment, you can wear them all day - 12 hours.

How do I know when I need to change my incontinence underwear?

Usually as soon as you feel them getting wet. With regular panties, this is also a sign that they may soon leak at the sides.
With LUNA+ underwear , which have leakage protection and are antibacterial, you can continue to wear them and change them for washed ones for comfort reasons, not for fear of leakage.

How to care for incontinence underwear

How to wash incontinence underwear?

Incontinence underwear are washed at a maximum of 40°C and without using fabric softeners (fabric softeners, stain removers, bleach). Spin at a maximum of 1000 rpm. We recommend liquid/gel detergent so that pieces of powder do not remain in your panties and then irritate your intimate areas.

How to dry incontinence underwear?

The panties are hung loosely to dry.

It must not be dried directly on a radiator, where the impermeable membrane could be damaged.

For the same reason, don't iron them. If you need to dry them faster, hang them over a heater. If you can hold your hand over the heat source and it doesn't feel hot to the touch, it's safe to dry your menstrual panties.

Tumble dry only on a gentle cycle, lower temperature.

Did you know?

In the Czech Republic, approximately 1 million people suffer from incontinence. The most affected group is older adults, and women are twice as likely to experience it as men. This may be due to factors such as the structure of the female urinary tract, pregnancy, childbirth, or menopause.
According to statistics, various degrees of this condition affect up to 50% of women over the age of 50.

How to choose incontinence underwear?

The best incontinence underwear

Which incontinence underwear are the best?

We have a favorite! But below we present a guide on how to choose the best panties for you and how to navigate the many brands of menstrual panties and choose the best ones for you.

Differences between incontinence underwear brands

Pay due attention to choosing menstrual panties. You will need about 2-5 pieces, and the right choice will ensure your support during the period when you feel fragile and vulnerable. Choose according to these recommendations. Sorted by importance:

Guide to choosing incontinence underwear

1. The power of incontinence

Incontinence underwear for light periods

If you have a light period, even on your heavy days, it's easy, you can choose from a wide range of manufacturers. Most of them are of sufficient quality to not leak during light bleeding.

Incontinence underwear for moderately heavy periods

But once you have a moderately heavy period, at least on your heavy days, you have to choose from the types for moderate periods and if you want to be sure of no leakage, then rather for heavier/strong periods, because manufacturers usually exaggerate their claims about how much their panties can handle menstruation.

Expect that panties for medium/heavy periods will be slightly thicker.

Incontinence underwear for heavy periods

If you have heavy periods, regular menstrual panties are not a good alternative for you. They will be quite thick, less breathable and will still leak because your period is released in doses, not continuously, so for a while you think it's still OK, and then it's too late. We all know this.

LUNAcare TIP: it's different with LUNA+ underwear

The revolutionary LUNA+ underwear features patented triple leak protection and is guaranteed not to leak — all while remaining thin.

They are suitable and tested for both light and moderate incontinence, while maintaining a slim profile that’s not much thicker than your regular underwear.

2. Safe for health – antibacterial

It is not advisable to underestimate the possible inflammation or even TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome). Thanks to the breathability of the underwear, it is minimized. The blood dries quickly (unlike pads or tampons) and thus prevents the growth of bacteria. However, we want to be sure here, so choose panties with antibacterial treatment.

Of course, the use of a highly breathable 3rd layer made of modern fabric with a membrane is standard and is used by every quality manufacturer.

LUNAcare TIP: it's different with LUNA+ underwear

LUNA+ incontinence underwear use an antibacterial treatment without the use of silver. Therefore, there is no risk of an allergic reaction to silver.

3. A cut that suits you

It is usually not possible to try on underwear in a store. However, when ordering online, you can legally return them within 14 days. Take advantage of this option and try them on to see how they fit. Of course, hygienically over your underwear. If they don't fit, try on a different cut, for example. They should feel good to you so that you are comfortable during your period. They also need to stay in place to do their job well.

4. Material – outer layers, the underwear itself

Material is important and each has its pros and cons. You will be washing your panties many times, so you need to take that into account.

If you absolutely have no problem with modern synthetic materials, it is better to choose the outer layer material (the panties themselves) made of nylon. These materials can withstand repeated washing without changing their properties. Choose ones with a mixture of spandex (elastane), which will ensure elasticity. At the same time, they dry faster and do not heat up, which is an advantage against sweating during long sitting or in warm weather.

But some women don't like the feel of synthetic fibers. Then they usually choose cotton.

Cotton tends to pill and shrink, and is not suitable for heavy use through repeated washing and wearing. So expect the lifespan to be half that of synthetic fibers.

When choosing, keep in mind that cotton is ecological in the sense of waste, but it is very demanding to grow and process and has a large ecological impact (water consumption, use of chemicals, etc.). This is largely solved by organic cotton.

LUNAcare TIP:

LUNA+ is made from premium nylon with 15% spandex. The material is described as “silk touch” , meaning it feels like silk.

5. First layer – absorbent/sucking

This layer is important because it touches your intimate areas, the so-called contact layer

Here's what to watch out for when using cotton:

It is very unsuitable for this layer. Cotton spreads the absorbed liquid to the edges and the result is a large and long-drying surface. Many, especially cheaper panties (for example, the Love Luna brand ) use cotton as the first layer (lining) instead of functional fabric. Here it is essential to use a functional layer with a so-called wicking effect, which quickly transports moisture to the second layer.

What about the wave?

The advantage of wool is its odor suppression and natural antibacterial properties. But like cotton, it stays wet for a long time. At the same time, it is a delicate material and easily tears . So wool does not belong in the contact layer.

LUNAcare TIP:

The first layer of the LUNA+ panties has been specially designed to keep you dry for as long as possible. Up to 2x longer than other panties of comparable thickness. You will feel dry and confident.

6. Color

How colors affect us

Price of incontinence underwear

The price range for menstrual panties is quite high. This is due to the use of different materials and different complex production processes. The cheapest ones are sewn panties, without antibacterial treatment, and made of regular cotton. On the other hand, seamless ones, with more modern materials ensuring greater breathability, are more expensive.

In drugstores ROSSMANN, DM, and Teta menstrual panties are usually a little more expensive. You pay an additional commission

Incontinence underwear reviews

Selected reviews of LUNA+ incontinence underwear

What is incontinence?

Incontinence is the unintentional leakage of urine or stool from the bladder or bowels. It’s a common issue affecting millions of people. The severity ranges from occasional urine leaks when coughing or laughing to a sudden and strong urge to urinate that you can’t control in time.

There are several types of incontinence, including:

  • Stress incontinence – when urine leaks during activities that put pressure on the bladder, such as coughing or laughing
  • Urge incontinence – when urine leaks following a sudden and intense urge to urinate
  • Overflow incontinence (chronic urinary retention) – when the bladder doesn’t empty completely, leading to frequent dribbling
  • Total incontinence – when the bladder cannot store any urine, causing constant leaking or very frequent urination

It is also possible to have mixed incontinence, which is a combination of stress and urge incontinence.

Who experiences incontinence?

Incontinence can affect anyone at any age, but it is more common in older adults, especially women.

Certain factors may increase the risk of developing incontinence, such as:

  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Obesity
  • Family history of incontinence
  • Aging – although incontinence is not an inevitable part of aging

How is incontinence classified?

Incontinence is categorized based on its cause and the type of leakage:

  • Stress incontinence is usually caused by weakened or damaged muscles that help control urination, such as the pelvic floor muscles and the urinary sphincter.
  • Urge incontinence is typically the result of overactive detrusor muscles that control the bladder.
  • Overflow incontinence is often due to an obstruction or blockage that prevents the bladder from emptying fully.
  • Total incontinence may be caused by a birth defect in the bladder, spinal cord injury, or a small tunnel-like hole (fistula) between the bladder and a nearby area.
