LUNA Period Panties

It depends on your flow strength and purpose of use.

The panties have high absorbency while maintaining their thinness. They're suitable even for heavy flow.

We recommend changing them once every 8–12 hours.

For extra heavy flow, combine them with another period product like a menstrual cup or tampon. Heavy flow means changing a large pad or tampon every 2–3 hours, extra heavy flow even more frequently.

More information in our article – How many period panties do I need?

Yes.

Period panties are used by women of all ages and are suitable for light to heavy periods, light to moderate urine leaks, and other discharge. They're especially suitable for virgins.

Hygiene

Period panties don't smell, even after wearing them all day.

Why don't they smell?

Odor is created by bacteria that multiply rapidly in menstrual blood under normal conditions.

With LUNA period panties, this is prevented by:

  1. Using permanent antibacterial treatment that immediately destroys most bacteria.
  2. Combining modern materials and nanofibers. The panties breathe, meaning moisture escapes and the captured blood dries quickly. Bacteria don't multiply in dried blood and it doesn't smell.

Yes. They're made only from health-safe materials with OEKO-TEX 100 certification. The top layer contains silver-free antibacterial treatment, making it completely safe without allergic reactions.

Testing is performed by 17 testing institutes forming the international Oeko-Tex association, which has branches in over 40 countries worldwide. The catalog criteria that form the basis for harmful substance tests are based on the latest scientific knowledge and are continuously updated. Testing criteria and methods are standardized internationally.

Test samples are tested by independent Oeko-Tex institutions for:

  • phthalates
  • pH value
  • formaldehyde content
  • pesticide presence
  • heavy metal content
  • chlorinated organic carriers
  • preservatives like pentachlorophenol and tetrachlorophenol

The presence of allergenic and potentially carcinogenic dyes is also tested.

Cup: Common Questions

We recommend sterilizing the cup either using the sterilization bag included in our package, or by boiling in water (5 minutes – we recommend setting a timer to prevent water from boiling away and damaging the cup). Before first sterilization, read our detailed guide. You can read more about cleaning the cup on our blog.

Keywords: sterilization, cup cleaning

Yes, you can urinate and have bowel movements with the cup in place and don't need to remove it before or after.

You shouldn't feel the cup inside. Sometimes you might be aware of it for a few minutes after insertion, but not long-term. If you feel it inside, or it even presses, try inserting it at a different angle or depth. If that doesn't help, contact us via chat or email.

Keywords: cup pressing

Related questions: Can the cup press uncomfortably?

LUNACUP menstrual cup typically lasts 2–3× longer than tampons. Generally, on heavy days the menstrual cup is emptied every 3–6 hours and on lighter days every 8–12 hours.

Never leave the cup inserted for more than 12 hours, even with LUNACUP evolution , which you can empty without removal.

Keywords: emptying cup, insertion time

Related questions:

  • How long does the cup last?
  • How many times a day must I empty the cup?

Yes. Unlike a pad, the menstrual cup won't move anywhere during the night. And unlike a tampon, there's minimal risk of toxic shock. When using a menstrual cup, you don't need to sleep in panties during your period, but can sleep however you're used to – even naked.

Keywords: night, sleeping with menstrual cup

The cup must be completely inside including the stem. If the stem doesn't fit due to a lower cervix, you need to trim it. For LUNACUP evolution don't trim the stem, but push it into either the first or second position.

Keywords: cup insertion, cup placement

Yes. With the cup you can swim without any restrictions, bathe whether in a tub, pool, or sea. Plus, while you usually need to change a tampon after swimming, the cup has you completely covered. Before going to the beach or pool, just empty it and then don't worry about anything until you return. The cup doesn't care whether you're sitting by the TV or swimming in the sea.

  • Can I bathe with the cup?
  • Can I swim with the cup?

LUNACUP is recommended for very light, light to medium flow. You can choose from three colors and two sizes. Over the years we've perfected the cup to adapt maximally to the female body. It has a soft, flat, flexible stem that helps with handling and can be trimmed if needed. The cup rim is reinforced for good sealing without leaks, with four holes around the perimeter for better opening and minimal suction. Material firmness is 50 shore.

LUNACUP menstrual cup – color variants

LUNACUP evolution is our innovation, on the market since January 2020, which we actively developed since 2017.

We recommend it for heavy to very heavy flow. Compared to LUNACUP, LUNACUP evolution has larger capacity. Again available in two sizes, but only in one color (snow white). It also has an anatomical shape that perfectly adapts to the female body.

Compared to LUNACUP, it's slightly firmer and differs in stem design. The stem is hollow and can be pushed inside – so it's not trimmed. The stem's advantage is the release mechanism, which opens only when pressed at the marked spot, allowing you to release blood during the day without removing the whole cup. The evolution cup needs to be inserted so it can be easily emptied, meaning the dots marking the release should be easily accessible. The cup contents won't flow out immediately and need to be held for 10–20 seconds.

When using it, we recommend wiping the stem with toilet paper after releasing menstrual blood, then pushing it back. If you have more clots, release blood more regularly so they don't settle. If the release mechanism clogs, remove the cup and rinse normally. You can also use the cup like a standard cup with the release mechanism as a bonus during heavier days to ease your cycle.

LUNACUP menstrual cup evolution

Both cups must be removed and rinsed ideally with warm water after 12 hours maximum. Sterilization is the same for both types. Both cups come with a sterilization bag for easy, quick microwave sterilization. As a bonus, both cups come with a cotton pouch for storage.

The cup can leak if it overflows beyond its maximum capacity. That's why we recommend using a pantyliner on heavy days at first, until you know how long the cup lasts and intuitively recognize when it needs emptying.

If you remove the cup and it's not completely full of blood, it may leak for several reasons:

It's not pressed against the vaginal walls around its entire circumference

After inserting the cup, check its circumference with your finger (preferably index finger). If it remains folded, relax and gently pull the vaginal wall away from the cup at the fold point and wait for it to fully open.

LUNACUP menstrual cup – checking, guide

It's incorrectly positioned and leaking around the cervix

Reach up to the cup rim with your index finger and check if you can feel the cervix. If yes, it needs to be inside the cup, otherwise it will leak from the side. If your cervix is high, try positioning the cup toward the cervix. Read more about the cervix on our blog.

LUNACUP leaking around cervix

Wrong size chosen

If the cup is correctly inserted but still leaks, it probably doesn't seal because it's too small. This shows as:

  • when you pull the stem, the cup easily slides down – offers no resistance
  • when you grasp the bottom, you can easily rotate it / it spins
  • the cup tends to slide out of the vagina, especially when bearing down on the toilet

Solution:

  • Choose a larger size.
  • If you already have the larger size, you have weakened pelvic floor muscles (most commonly after childbirth). Then use a liner (we recommend cloth) with the cup and start strengthening your pelvic floor muscles.

Related questions:

A quality menstrual cup is very flexible and seals well even when compressed. You don't need to worry it won't fit. However, natural childbirth plays a crucial role in a woman's life. That's why we've prepared two cup sizes.

Smaller size

We recommend the smaller size for women under 30 or women who haven't given birth or delivered by cesarean section.

We also recommend the smaller size for women who feel tightness and have difficulty inserting super and larger tampons.

Larger size

We recommend the larger size for women over 30 or women who have given birth vaginally.

We also recommend the larger size for heavier flow, women with weakened pelvic muscles, or women who use the largest tampon sizes.

LUNACUP size chart

Cup type Diameter (mm) Height (mm) Stem (mm) Capacity to mark (ml)
Classic cup (smaller size) 40 70 20 15
Classic cup (larger size) 45 70 16 20

Evolution cup with release valve

LUNACUP Evolution menstrual cup is designed for heavier flow and offers a special release mechanism.

Tips for choosing the right size:

  • Tip 1: Lunacup is designed to fit as many women as possible. It has a more conical shape, which is the natural shape inside the vagina, making it more universal than bell-shaped cups.
  • Tip 2: Don't choose cup size by volume. That's not important for most women (except those with very heavy flow). Choose by age and births. The right size ensures easy use and comfort.
  • Tip 3: It's rare that the chosen size doesn't fit. We always solve it together and send the second size with a discount. No stress, no reason to worry.

About Menstrual Cups

Menstrual cups are made from medical-grade silicone. Medical silicone has been used in healthcare for over 50 years - for contact lenses, breast implants, and heart valve replacements.

Medical silicone is:

  • Hypoallergenic: meaning no allergic reactions.
  • Antibacterial: microorganisms don't multiply on it like with pads or tampons.
  • Flexible, soft, and durable
  • Neutral to your body
  • Maintains vaginal pH

LUNACUP menstrual cups are made from platinum-grade medical silicone meeting strict ISO 10993 European and USP Class VI American standards - approved even for short-term implantation. Not all manufacturers use such high-purity material.

No chemicals are used in production. It's completely safe to insert a silicone menstrual cup. You probably can't imagine using cellulose as an implant or contact lens. Yet you use pads and tampons on your most intimate areas every month. You might argue you hadn't heard of menstrual cups before. Now you know. So why not change ASAP?

With pads you're very limited, always aware of them, often tense about leaks, checking yourself. They restrict your movement, you sweat, they often smell.

Tampons are somewhat better – you can move, carefully bathe or swim, but you're still aware. "Did it leak?" echoes in your head. Tampons dry you out, you feel them, and they can cause TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome).

Menstrual cups - insert and forget. They immediately adapt to your body. You won't feel them sitting, running, cycling, doing aerobics, or yoga. They become one with your body.

After about 2-3× longer than you'd change a pad or tampon, remove the menstrual cup, empty contents, and rinse immediately. Thanks to the material, cups are instantly clean and hygienic. Then reinsert and enjoy your day.

You don't need to carry anything (pads/tampons), don't need a trash can. And you feel so much better. Suddenly your period isn't annoying. No pad or tampon pressing on you, just one clean menstrual cup.

Related questions:

  • How long do cups last compared to pads and tampons?
  • What are the benefits of menstrual cups?

Let's break it down...

You use about 22 pads and tampons per month, that's 264 per year and 2,640 in ten years. Over a lifetime, that's about 11,000 disposable pads or tampons per person. So you'll throw away 125-150 kg of hygiene waste in your lifetime.

Plastic waste ends up in landfills or worse - in rivers, oceans, and beaches. A conventional hygiene product takes much longer to decompose than the lifetime of the person who threw it away.

The annual carbon footprint from disposable hygiene products is 5.3 kg CO₂.

We also need to realize that cotton - used to make conventional period products - requires massive amounts of water. Cotton plantations are often attacked by pests, so plants are protected with chemical pesticides. Pads also contain polyethylene plastic for adhesive backing, which is extremely harmful to the environment. Not to mention the dioxin and chlorine in tampons and pads. Read about tampon and pad risks.

Menstrual cups are clearly the most eco-friendly period option.

One cup lasts you 10 years.

  • You produce zero waste while using it.
  • You don't even need to wash anything, unlike cloth pads.
  • Cups aren't made from plastic/rubber or petroleum products.
  • When it's served its time, it's easily disposed of ecologically.
  • Minimal environmental impact compared to tampons and pads.
  • One cup's lifespan saves 2,300-2,600 pads or tampons per person.

Today more than ever, it's crucial to think about our period's environmental impact.

Menstrual Cup

A menstrual cup is a modern period product. It's a soft silicone cup you fold and insert into your vagina. It opens up inside and catches menstrual blood. When full, you remove it and pour out the blood. Rinse the cup and reinsert. You can use it throughout your cycle. After your period, sterilize it by boiling and store for next month.

You might have doubts and lots of questions. We've been using cups for years, so we'll answer everything here. If we missed something, just ask - we'll get back to you right away.

All your doubts and questions come down to these two facts:

  • Millions of people worldwide have been using cups every month for years. They voluntarily switched from pads and tampons.
  • The most common reaction after trying a cup: "This is such a game-changer, I'd never go back! Wish I'd known about this sooner!"

Everything you do on any other day when you don't have your period.

*On heavy flow days and throughout your period, we recommend resting more, spending time alone, and maintaining a calm routine. Menstruation is a cyclical phase when a woman goes deeper within herself and cleanses physically, mentally, and spiritually. Every woman should be aware of this and respect it, respect herself, and listen to her wise body's signals.

Specifically, with a cup you'll enjoy without limits:

  • Swimming, bathing in pools and sea with a menstrual cup
  • Cycling, horseback riding with a menstrual cup
  • Running with a menstrual cup
  • Exercise including aerobics, yoga, pilates etc. with a menstrual cup
  • Sunbathing not just topless, but bottomless with a menstrual cup
  • Sauna, steam room with a menstrual cup
  • Ice skating with a menstrual cup
  • Skiing and other winter sports with a menstrual cup
  • Sleeping (the cup reliably protects all night) with a menstrual cup

What can't I do or what don't you recommend with a menstrual cup?

A menstrual cup doesn't limit you in any way. The only exception is the postpartum period. We don't recommend using a menstrual cup shortly after birth when the body is cleansing and the vagina should remain open. And during intercourse, let's say be very careful. 😊

In ancient cultures and indigenous tribes, women during their menstruation rested, went to quiet places and menstruated into the earth. This is the best, most natural and healthiest way to spend your period.

They used so-called free bleeding, where a woman can learn to control her cervix and hold blood inside the uterus until she herself releases the cervix and lets the blood flow. Catching blood with a menstrual cup is a great way to combine the natural functioning of the female body with modern times.

Blood flow doesn't stop when using a menstrual cup, the menstrual blood is just temporarily caught before being returned to the earth. It's still a very natural path that's in harmony with nature.

Menstrual Cups and Health Risks

Is a menstrual cup safe for health?

Using medical silicone in healthcare over the last 60 years has proven it's completely safe and health-neutral. Its use in heart valve implants speaks for itself.

The material the cup is made from also has antibacterial properties. Bacteria can't survive on it because they have no nutrients. A menstrual cup made from medical silicone doesn't promote bacterial growth.

At the same time, it's sealed inside the vagina throughout use and isn't connected to the external environment, unlike a tampon string. The cup thus becomes part of a woman's body during menstruation.

A menstrual cup doesn't disrupt pH or moisture in a woman's vagina. It's completely neutral to the body's internal environment. The cup also adapts to the vaginal shape and doesn't press.

LUNACUP menstrual cup has passed complete health safety testing at the Czech National Institute of Public Health.

Are there any health risks associated with the cup?

No. No health complications or risks are associated with menstrual cups. The only period when use is not recommended is postpartum, when you need to leave the vaginal passage open.

Many women since starting to use a menstrual cup no longer suffer from recurring infections and yeast infections. With a menstrual cup, menstruation is much more natural and healthier.

Some women use the cup even outside menstruation as additional protection for their sensitive vaginal environment, for example when visiting chlorinated pools. The menstrual cup protects the vagina sufficiently through mild suction.

Worried about moving with a menstrual cup? Don't be!

This common concern, which comes from the ingrained habit of catching blood in something absorbent, is definitely unfounded. Blood is naturally caught and poured out after several hours.

Menstrual blood slowly flows from the cervix through an opening the size of a pinhead. When standing or lying down, blood collects in the menstrual cup. Even if you stand on your head, blood definitely won't flow back through the tiny opening.

After all, even when using a pad in such a position, blood currently in the vagina will flow upward. This is completely normal and poses no risk.

The vagina separates the body's interior from the external environment. The menstrual cup also creates suction and prevents air access from outside. Menstrual blood can't spoil and can't smell, as happens with pads where blood reacts with air and bacteria.

Interesting fact

Did you know pads and tampons aren't sterilized? The cellulose or similar material tampons are made from goes through production and is then packaged. When it reaches you, you have no guarantee it's bacteria-free. You don't even have any way to sterilize it.

A menstrual cup instead can be washed or boiled anytime in the comfort of your home.

Keywords: blood in cup, sterilization

You might also ask:

  • Is collecting blood harmful?
  • Can menstrual blood spoil?

The risk is almost zero, as TSS development is extremely rare with cups.

To date, there have been only 2 reported TSS cases worldwide with menstrual cups, while hundreds of TSS cases occur annually with tampons.

Risk factors for TSS with cups include:

  • Using a cup that's too large and damages the vaginal wall
  • Leaving the cup in for over 12 hours
  • Poor hygiene when handling the cup

Prevention is simple – choose the right size, don't exceed 12 hours of use, and wash your hands before handling.

Troubleshooting

Stay calm! The cup cannot get lost inside you.

Steps to remove a stuck cup:

  1. Relax - tension makes it harder
  2. Squat down - shortens the vaginal canal
  3. Bear down - like having a bowel movement
  4. Break the seal - reach up and press the side
  5. Remove slowly - wiggle side to side if needed

If still difficult, take a break and try again later when relaxed.

Keywords: stuck cup, can't remove

Solutions for cups that won't open:

  • Try different folds - some work better than others
  • Insert higher or lower - find your sweet spot
  • Rotate the cup - grip the base and turn
  • Press vaginal wall - create space for it to pop open
  • Cold water rinse - makes silicone firmer

The cup needs space to open - ensure you're relaxed!

Keywords: won't open, cup not opening

First Use of Menstrual Cup

Yes, you can. Using a cup is very simple and you'll learn quickly. The first insertion might take a few minutes, which is completely normal – you're learning something new.

For easier start:

  • Read the instructions carefully
  • Try inserting outside your period first
  • Use water or water-based lubricant
  • Relax and give yourself time

Most women get comfortable with the cup within 1-3 cycles. Then it becomes automatic.

Keywords: first use, beginner

You can try the cup anytime – even outside your period for practice. Many women find it helpful to:

  • Practice insertion and removal when not menstruating
  • Start using on lighter flow days
  • Have pantyliners as backup initially

There's no wrong time to start – just when you feel ready!

Myths & Facts

No! This is a common myth.

Facts about vaginal elasticity:

  • The vagina is incredibly elastic
  • It returns to its normal size after cup removal
  • Cups are much smaller than what the vagina handles during childbirth
  • Regular use doesn't cause permanent stretching

Your vagina is designed to stretch and return to normal!

Keywords: stretching, vagina stretch

Absolutely not! It's physically impossible.

Why the cup can't get lost:

  • The cervix blocks the top of the vagina
  • The vaginal canal is only 3-6 inches long
  • There's nowhere for it to go
  • You can always reach it with your fingers

The cup stays in the vaginal canal - it has nowhere else to go!

Keywords: lost cup, cup disappear

Care and Maintenance

During your period:

  • Rinse with cold water first (prevents staining)
  • Then wash with warm water
  • Use mild, unscented soap if needed
  • In public restrooms, just wipe with toilet paper

Between periods:

  • Sterilize by boiling for 5 minutes
  • Or use the sterilization bag in microwave
  • Store in the cotton pouch provided

Keywords: cleaning, maintenance

Discoloration is natural and doesn't affect the cup's function. To minimize staining:

  • Always rinse with cold water first
  • Soak in hydrogen peroxide solution (1:1 with water)
  • Leave in direct sunlight for a few hours
  • Use baking soda paste for stubborn stains

Remember: stains are cosmetic only and don't mean the cup is dirty!
