Risks of tampons and pads
They contain toxic substances
The bleaching process (chlorination) produces the toxic substance dioxin. Manufacturers often add other chemicals to enhance the functionality of pads and tampons.
They are not sterile.
No manufacturer guarantees the sterility of tampons/pads; you won't find it on the packaging because it can't be ensured.
An ideal place for bacteria to multiply
The pulp used in tampons is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, as is the steamy, non-breathing environment of the pad. Bacteria multiply at a tremendous rate. There is a risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS).
They disrupt the natural environment
Tampons dry out and change the pH of the vagina; pads cause steam. Tampons release tiny fibers of fabric into the vagina.
