How to choose a menstrual cup - a selection guide

How to choose a menstrual cup - a selection guide

How do you choose the right type and brand of menstrual cup? Which cup is suitable for you?

A menstrual cup is a simple product made only from silicone. At first glance, different brands may look similar, but there are differences between them. These differences can determine whether a menstrual cup will suit you or not, and how comfortable it will be to use.

The cup should be made exclusively from medical-grade silicone, which ensures health safety and does not cause allergic reactions. If you want your cup to always be comfortable, adapt to your body and vaginal shape, maintain good suction, and not cause any pressure, then focus on what material it's made from.

The material should always feel soft and pleasant to the touch. The higher quality the medical silicone used, the softer and more flexible the cup. This affects both functionality and lifespan of the menstrual cup, as well as how easy it is to clean. A softer cup has smaller pores, so dirt doesn't naturally stick to it.

TIP: Most manufacturers save on the quality of medical silicone used. We therefore recommend the LUNACUP menstrual cup, which is made from platinum-grade (*****) medical silicone.

The surface of the menstrual cup should not contain any ridges, bumps, or folds. These make cleaning the cup more difficult.

The stem is the end of the menstrual cup that serves for easier removal of the menstrual cup. When a cup irritates or can be felt by a woman, it's usually caused by the stem. It's therefore important to choose its design very carefully.

Your cup's stem should:

- be as small as possible so it doesn't interfere,

- be large enough to make handling the cup easier,

- have grips to prevent slipping,

- be soft,

- not have sharp edges,

- be just the right length so you don't need to trim it (cutting creates sharp edges that can then irritate).

TIP: Beware of round and narrow hollow stems. When any dirt gets into a hollow stem, it cannot be easily washed out. The stem is also narrow and difficult to grip. Always choose a menstrual cup with a flat stem instead.

The LUNACUP menstrual cup features a very soft and flexible stem with rounded edges. The stem is sufficiently short and doesn't need trimming. It has a diamond shape. This ensures that even with its shorter length, it can be easily gripped. Additionally, the stem features three raised rings (grips), which prevent slipping during cup handling.

Our new LUNACUP evolution cup has a unique stem that can be in three different positions and adapts perfectly to cervix height while also having a release mechanism.

Menstrual cups are most commonly manufactured in two shape designs - cone or bell shape. Generally speaking, cone-shaped cups are more universal and suit a larger number of women. The LUNACUP menstrual cup has exactly a cone shape.

Bell shape we recommend only for women who have, for example, relaxed pelvic floor muscles and find a wider cup more acceptable.

The upper part of the menstrual cup must always be widened. The cup's rim presses against the vaginal walls. The menstrual cup then seals well. However, it's definitely not true that the wider and higher the cup's rim, the better it seals. A wide rim can actually cause problems when handling the cup, and insertion and removal can then be uncomfortable. The reinforcement of the cup's upper part should therefore be only moderate, and the ring on the menstrual cup's rim should be more pronounced.

The LUNACUP menstrual cup we created to seal well while the design of the upper rim part is comfortable and pleasant to handle.

Grips: On the lower part of the menstrual cup (above the stem), there should be grips. Thanks to these, the menstrual cup won't slip during removal.

Holes: Holes on the cup serve to release suction. They are located on every menstrual cup. If they are positioned as high as possible, the cup's capacity is not reduced. At the same time, the holes should be large enough to be cleaned well when dirty.

Measurement lines: A proper menstrual cup also has volume lines that help you measure your menstrual flow intensity. Thanks to the lines, you'll always have an overview.

The LUNACUP menstrual cup features grips, sufficiently high-positioned holes, and measurement lines. Cup handling is thus simple and you can always rely on its full functionality.

The colored variants of the LUNACUP menstrual cup are health-safe (tested in accredited laboratories).

Always check that the manufacturer has performed health safety tests on the cup.

All LUNACUP tests proved 100% health safety. Tests were performed in a series of international accredited laboratories including state laboratories.
