The Cervix

The Cervix – What You Should Know About This Important Part of Your Body

The cervix is a small but important part of your anatomy. It connects the vagina to the uterus and plays a central role in menstruation. If you use a menstrual cup or are thinking about it, it's helpful to know about it.

What is the Cervix?

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus. It protrudes slightly into the vagina and has a small opening (the os) through which menstrual blood flows. It feels like the tip of your nose – firm, but with a little give.

The Cervix and Your Cycle

Your cervix changes throughout your cycle:

  • During your period: It sits lower and is slightly open to allow blood to flow out
  • After your period: It rises higher again and closes
  • Around ovulation: It is at its highest, softest, and most open

Why is This Important for Your Menstrual Cup?

The position of your cervix determines how low or high you should insert your LUNACUP. Women with a low cervix need to insert the cup closer to the entrance. Women with a high cervix can insert it further in.

How to find your cervix: Insert a clean finger into your vagina. If you feel something firm after 1-2 inches (3-5 cm), you have a low cervix. If you have to reach deeper, it is positioned higher.

The Cervix and Your Health

The cervix has important protective functions:

  • It produces cervical mucus that fends off bacteria
  • It regulates what enters and exits the uterus
  • It changes its consistency depending on the cycle phase

Regular check-ups (Pap smear) are important to monitor the health of your cervix.

Knowing your own body is the first step to a better period. The cervix may be small – but it makes a big difference.
